Why 1:45 PM Beats 2:00 PM: Your Real Afternoon Dip

The Dip Is Not at 2:00 PM

The “post-lunch slump” is one of the most well-documented phenomena in sleep science. But the popular version of it — that your energy crashes at 2:00 PM sharp — is wrong. There is no universal 2:00 PM. There is only a window, and that window is anchored to when you woke up, not when the clock says lunch was.

NapTune models your dip with a Gaussian curve — a bell curve. The peak of the curve lands about seven hours after your measured wake time. From there, it falls off symmetrically in both directions. Earlier risers dip earlier. Later risers dip later. Chronotype shifts the whole curve by up to 45 minutes.

This is why 1:45 PM beats 2:00 PM for most people, and why 2:30 PM beats 1:45 PM for others.

The Seven-Hour Rule

Researchers have long known that the strongest circadian dip in a normal sleep-wake cycle lands roughly in the middle of the waking day. For most adults, that’s about seven hours after wake:

  Wake 06:00  →  dip ≈ 13:00
  Wake 07:00  →  dip ≈ 14:00
  Wake 08:00  →  dip ≈ 15:00
  Wake 09:00  →  dip ≈ 16:00

If you woke at 6:00 AM, your dip is around 1:00 PM. If you woke at 8:00 AM, your dip is around 3:00 PM. A blanket “nap at 2:00 PM” rule fits almost nobody perfectly.

What the Bell Curve Looks Like

NapTune scores every 15-minute slot of the day on a Gaussian falloff. The closer a slot is to your dip, the higher its circadian score. The further away, the lower. Here’s what it looks like for a 6:45 AM wake time:

Peak is at 13:45. The curve falls to 50% about 90 minutes before or after. By 6 PM, napping is circadian-meaningless.

Chronotype Shifts the Curve

The seven-hour anchor is the starting point, but it’s not the whole story. Your chronotype — your body’s natural preference for being early or late — moves the curve by up to an hour:

  1. Morning people: the dip lands 30 minutes earlier. A 6:45 AM wake becomes a 1:15 PM peak.
  2. Intermediate: the seven-hour anchor is the dip. No shift.
  3. Evening people: the dip lands 45 minutes later. The same 6:45 AM wake becomes a 2:30 PM peak.

This is also why evening-types often feel like the standard 2:00 PM advice is “too early” for them. They’re right. The curve is shifted.

Why 15-Minute Granularity

You might wonder: if the curve is smooth, why not just pick the peak and call it a day? Because the calendar is not smooth. A 2:00 PM meeting changes which 15-minute slot is the actual best, even if 2:00 PM is theoretically the peak.

NapTune scores slots every 15 minutes, then mixes in calendar fit and a lateness penalty. The result is that 1:45 PM often wins over 2:00 PM not because 1:45 is a better circadian moment, but because 1:45 gives you 15 more minutes of buffer before the meeting. The score is slightly lower on the curve, but the calendar fit is much higher, and the combination wins.

Fifteen minutes of granularity is the difference between “nap now” and “wait five more minutes for the perfect moment.”

The Wake-Time Problem (and What We Do)

All of this requires a known wake time. NapTune degrades gracefully if it doesn’t have one: it falls back to a static 2:00 PM anchor and lowers confidence to “Limited.” You still get a recommendation, but the app tells you — explicitly — that connecting Health Connect will make it sharper.

This is the honest move. We could fake confidence. We don’t. The confidence label is a contract: if the app says “Good,” you should be able to trust the recommendation.

How the Dip Combines With the Other Signals

The circadian score is the heaviest single weight in the recommendation (40%). The other signals are calendar, sleep history, and lateness. The dip tells us when the best moment is in principle. The other signals tell us whether that moment is actually usable.
