The Inertia Guard: How NapTune Wakes You Sharp, Not Groggy

The 45-Minute Trap

There is a moment in every nap where the math turns against you. It’s somewhere around the 30-minute mark. If you keep going, you descend into deep sleep (Stage 3). The alarm rings 15 minutes later, mid-cycle, and you wake up worse than before you lay down.

This is sleep inertia, and it can last 30 minutes or more. The nap didn’t fail. The nap was actively harmful. You traded a 2 PM productivity dip for a 2:30 PM cognitive hole.

NapTune has a system for this. We call it the Inertia Guard.

The Runway Check

Before NapTune recommends a duration, it computes the runway — the time between the chosen nap start and either your next busy block or your bedtime-safety cutoff, whichever comes first. Then it asks one question:

Can a full nap of the recommended duration fit inside that runway?

If yes, you get the full duration. If no, NapTune shrinks the plan to whatever does fit. The math looks like this:

   Recommended duration:    25 min  (debt tier: MEDIUM)
   Buffer after wake:       15 min  (your wind-down to next task)
   Next calendar event:     15:00  (your hard meeting)
   Chosen start:             14:15
   Raw runway:              45 min
   Required runway:         25 + 15 = 40 min
   Result:                  FULL FIT  →  recommend 25 min

But change the meeting to 14:50 and the picture flips:

   Next calendar event:     14:50
   Raw runway:              35 min
   Required runway:         40 min
   Result:                  TIGHT FIT  →  cap at 15 min

NapTune didn’t change its mind about your debt. It changed its mind about what your day can hold.

The Collapse-to-Power-Nap Rule

The most important rule in the Inertia Guard is this: a nap that can’t fit a full cycle collapses to a clean ≤20-minute power nap rather than a groggy 45.

The reasoning is simple. The dangerous zone is 30 to 60 minutes — long enough to enter deep sleep, short enough that any reasonable alarm will interrupt it. There are exactly two safe spots:

  1. Short (≤ 20 minutes): you stay in light sleep. Wake up alert. This is the power nap.
  2. Full cycle (75–90 minutes): you go through deep sleep and back up to light sleep. Wake up alert.

There is no safe 30, no safe 45, no safe 60. So if the runway can’t hold a full cycle, the engine won’t try to fit half a cycle. It collapses to a power nap.

   runway ≥ 90 min  →  full cycle nap (75 min)
   60 ≤ runway < 90 →  medium recovery (25–45 min)
   20 ≤ runway < 60 →  power nap (15–20 min)  ← collapse
   runway < 20      →  no nap feasible

What “Tight Fit” Looks Like in the App

When NapTune has to collapse the plan, it tells you. The reasoning line in the recommendation includes a “tight fit” note, and the duration drops to 15 minutes (or 10 in extreme cases). You see something like:

22-min recovery nap → reduced to 15 min — tight fit, that’s all today’s calendar allows.

This is honest. The app isn’t pretending the 22-minute recommendation is still the right call. It’s telling you that the real-world constraint overrode the model.

The Coffee-Nap Carve-Out

There is one specific case the Inertia Guard handles differently: the coffee-nap.

If you’ve logged caffeine today and the recommendation is for a longer nap, NapTune caps the duration at 20 minutes. The reason is pharmacological. Caffeine takes about 20 minutes to cross the blood-brain barrier. A 20-minute nap timed right lets you wake up just as the caffeine is kicking in, and the two effects stack.

But that only works if the nap is short. A 75-minute coffee-nap means you’ll be deeply asleep when the caffeine arrives, and you’ll wake up to a wired-but-groggy state that’s worse than either alone.

So if you tell NapTune you had coffee, and the app thinks a long nap is justified, the long nap is not what you get. You get a 20-minute power nap with a caffeine kicker.

The Runway Isn’t Just the Next Meeting

The runway is also bounded by your bedtime cutoff — the latest time a nap can end without wrecking tonight’s sleep. A 75-minute nap at 8 PM has a four-hour runway to midnight, but it’s still a terrible plan: it burns all your sleep pressure, you lie awake at midnight, and tomorrow’s rolling debt is worse.

The cutoff shrinks as the recommended duration grows, because longer naps release more sleep pressure. NapTune uses this rule:

   gap_before_bedtime = 6h + (nap_duration − 20) / 30h

   20-min nap  →  nap must end 6 h before bed
   45-min nap  →  nap must end 6.8 h before bed
   75-min nap  →  nap must end 7.7 h before bed

The math is conservative. A 75-minute nap at 3 PM means no sleep pressure for an 11 PM bedtime. A 75-minute nap at 5 PM means bedtime slips to 1 AM. The engine would never pick the second option — and the cutoff rule is what guarantees it.

What This Means for You

You will never see a 45-minute nap in NapTune. You will never see a 60-minute nap. You will see a 25, a 75, or a 15. Sometimes you’ll see a 22 because the personalization layer blended your past ratings into the model. But the dangerous middle is structurally impossible.

This is the Inertia Guard’s job. The model says how much you need. The Guard says what your day can hold. The recommendation is the intersection.
